About Steven M. Kane, Ph.D.
Dr. Kane was born in Boston. He did his undergraduate work at Boston University. Upon graduation, he was initiated into Psi Chi, The National Honor Society in Psychology. Supported by a National Defense Education Act Title IV Fellowship, he then earned his master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Kane’s doctoral studies were carried out at Princeton University. His dissertation research was funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Two years of postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Wisconsin capped Dr. Kane’s formal education. His psychiatric studies were made possible by a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health.
Dr. Kane has served on the clinical staffs of both the Massachusetts Treatment Center and Bridgewater State Hospital. For many years he was Director of Clinical Education and Senior Supervising Psychotherapist at Interfaith Counseling Center in Providence.; Since 1992 he has been a part-time professor at the University of Rhode Island/Providence. In 1997 he was recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award.
Dr. Kane is a noted speaker on a variety of topics.; He has published widely. His many articles and reviews have appeared in scholarly journals, books, and encyclopedias.
Music holds a place of centrality in Dr. Kane’s life. He lectures regularly on jazz and popular music of the period 1920-1950. He also performs frequently on piano.
For nearly 30 years now, Dr. Kane has maintained a private practice of psychotherapy and life coaching in Providence, Rhode Island. His office is located in a Queen Anne Victorian dating from 1883. The building is conveniently located, with easy access to and from routes 95, 195, 6, 10, and 146. There is abundant on-street parking. Meetings with clients take place in a congenial and comfortable room with a fireplace. The individuals and couples who come to see Dr. Kane are basically healthy people who are motivated to work toward richer, more productive, and more meaningful lives.
Dr. Kane is passionate about his work and devoted to his clients. As he sees it, his purpose in life is to heal and to educate, in the broadest senses of the terms.
